The second Rivals.com preseason top-25 poll was released this week and Fresno State came in at #28 in the poll. They are the only team from the WAC that received any votes and came in ahead of Arizona, Arizona State and Tennessee just to name a few.[details]
The good: McCauley has the size, speed, quickness, agility and ball instincts to become a top-flight shutdown corner if he plays with more consistency. He is a gifted cornerback who has the best skill set in this good class. He has athletic ability that allows him to be a ball hawk in coverage, match up with the premier receivers, run stride for stride with them and battle the big wideouts over the middle. For a corner with his size to have the movement skills to play tight man coverage is rare.
The bad: He needs development in his basic technique and reads to fully realize his talent. He has a great combination of size, speed, quickness and agility, but his ability to read the route and make decisions has hurt his final grade. His instincts are suspect and he is slow to react to moves, especially double moves that allow too much separation - mainly in the deep game. In zone coverage, he is raw in many respects and needs development from all aspects.
Outlook: He carries a definite first-round grade, but could slide to the early second round and is a great value there. He has the recovery speed to match up with the top NFL receivers and the size to battle the big receivers. He carries an early starting grade. He has incredible upside as a corner, and could become among the best in the game. Look for him to go in the latter part of the first round with the Patriots, Giants and Ravens interested.
