2006 (Redshirt): Dominated Thursday night football scrimmages ... also gave first-team defense fits when mimmicking the opposition's top receiver.
The Good: A tall, well-built receiver who displays excellent quickness and body control in and out of his breaks. Possesses excellent hands and awareness down the field. Consistently can go up and pluck balls at their highest point. Is a sharp route runner who snaps off routes quickly and showcases a good burst out of his breaks. Uses his body to gain inside position and shield defenders from the ball. An ultra productive wideout whose skill set should translate well to the next level.
The Bad: Lacks elite deep speed and simply can't outrun every corner down the field. Needs to do a better job with his release; has a tendency to jump into his routes rather than use his size or quickness to burst off the line. Showed up at the NFL Combine with a stress fracture in his left foot and there are concerns about whether he will be able to run or not.
Positives: Top competitor. Excellent run skills and strength when he touches the ball. Creates something out of nothing and shows very natural run instincts and vision. Very good short-area quickness and change of direction. Has extremely long, 341/4-inch arms for his size and they look elastic snagging the ball when extra coverage is rolled his way. Comes back to the ball, high-points it and attacks it in the air. Makes difficult catches look easy and adjusts well to poorly thrown balls. Has big, strong hands and takes the ball away from defenders. Very good ball skills. Can beat double coverage and outjump defenders for the ball (seethe game-winning TD catch vs. Texas). Plays faster than timed speed and knows how to get open. Great body control. Plays big in big games and wants the ball in the clutch. Tough and has shown he will battle through injuries. Strong and physical and powers off the line. Willing, aggressive downfield blocker. Superb production. Negatives: Not a burner. Too flashy and immature, and his motivation could change with a big payday. Expects prima donna treatment and already thinks he has arrived. Could be dragged down by hanger-ons. Too often runs to spots and was not asked to run a full route tree in a pass-happy offense. Durability needs to be considered. Summary: A very competitive playmaker with bionic arms, Crabtree is big, strong, tough and physical with excellent hands and has everything scouts desire in a receiver except for elite top-end speed. Will be best running short digs, hitches, slants and bubble screens where he is able to create after the catch. He would be a dynamite fit in a West Coast offense. Has a history of foot problems that may not go away with his quick-cutting ability at such a great size, and durability issues could affect his draft stock. Grade: Top-10 talent.
