Thursday was the first day of school for most Arizona State students and exactly two weeks until the Sun Devils kick off the season against UC Davis. Here are some sights and sounds we observed from the practice. [details]
Notes: Also played soccer as a California prep. Redshirted in 2006. Won the Groza Award in '07 after nailing 24-of-25 FG attempts and 46-of-48 PATs while punting 47 times for a 39.2-yard average with a long of 63 yards and 11 inside the 20-yard line. Connected on 19-of-25 FG attempts in '08 with a long of 49 and made 29-of-30 PATs while punting 59-41.4-L61-23. Was successful on 8-of-13 FG attempts with a long of 29 and made 19-of-20 PATs. Missed four games as he nursed a hip flexor injury. In '10, made 17-of-24 FG attempts with a long of 52 and 42-of-45 PATs. Also handled kickoffs 75-64.2-12 and punted 6-36.2-L49-0. Team captain. Will be a 24-year-old rookie.
Positives: Good leg strength and range - ball jumps off his foot. Has a calm demeanor to handle pressure kicks. Good character - hardworking, coachable and takes pride in his craft.
Negatives: Could stand to hasten his approach. Has a whippy follow-through that pulls him to the left and affects accuracy. Effectiveness wanes from further out - hit just 13-of-24 FG attempts from beyond 40 yards in his career. Average depth and hang time on kickoffs.
Summary: Put himself on the map with a strong first two seasons in the desert, but was hurt as a junior and less consistent as a senior. Has workable tools to eventually vie for a job.
