The most talked about Texas middle schooler since Matthew Stafford? Where will he be in ninth grade? 2011 TCU NIKE Combine stars Allen QB, Duncanville OL and Mansfield DL.. The new Lake Travis and Garland offensive coordinators? [details]
The Good: A strong-armed passer who has the ability to make all the necessary throws at the next level. Showcases nice touch on passes down the field and isn't afraid to hang in the pocket until the last moment. Possesses good footwork and balance and knows how to read a defense in his drop from center. Has matured significantly over the past two years. The Bad: Will trust his arm too much at times and force the ball into tight coverage. Has a tendency to lose his strike zone and isn't the most accurate of passers. His overall consistency seems to run hot and cold. Gets rattled easily with pressure in his face.
Positives: Very thickly built. Has an Elway-esque cannon arm. Can throw a top-end fastball falling away and still hit receivers in stride. Has a strong stature in the pocket and does not go down easily. Has quick eyes to read progressions on the move and when his first option is covered, he instinctively finds his second and third receivers as he assesses coverage. Can throw the deep post as well as any quarterback that has come out of the draft in a long time. Can make every velocity throw with ease. Can manipulate his arm and his throwing platform extremely efficiently, naturally getting his feet and hips squared on the move to create plays downfield on the run. Showed the ability to escape the pocket behind a marginal offensive line. Looks unstoppable when he is hot. Has shown he can handle the pressure of playing on a big stage. Very competitive. A gym rat. Tough. Has a passion for the game. Has a quick throwing motion and outstanding release quickness. Has been a model of durability. Has great upside. Negatives: Makes some questionable decisions and can be inconsistent with his reads. Takes some chances fitting the ball into tight windows and will overly rely on his arm. Too streaky and at times appeared to slip into a funk - see Florida and Alabama games. Could do a better job stepping up in the pocket and using his protection instead of flushing out into pressure. Needs to learn how to take more pace off the ball. Arm is so strong that he tends to aim the deep ball instead of just letting it rip. Was surrounded by very talented skill players that adjusted well to the ball.
