Most people say Bob Stoops and Oklahoma will roll over Connecticut in tonight's Fiesta Bowl. But that's what they said about the Sooners when they played Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl a few years back, isn't it? Will OU be shocked again? Tom Dienhart has more.[details]
Notes: Two-way linemen who also competed in track and field (shot put, javelin) as a Connecticut prep. Weighed approximately 230 pounds coming out of high school and redshirted in 2006. Appeared in all 13 games as a reserve tackle in '07. Stepped into the lineup and started all 13 games at right guard in '08. Had an ankle scope in the spring of '09 before starting all 13 games at left guard. Made the switch back to right guard in '10 and made 13 starts. Team captain. Strained a calf muscle prior to the Senior Bowl and did not participate. Did not lift at the Combine after having the flu two weeks prior.
Positives: Excellent body and arm length. Knows how to work an edge, pull, trap and maneuver in space - can work up to the second and third level and connect with linebackers and defensive backs. Plays with some aggression in the run game - functional run blocker. Tosses and torques and throws defenders around (when he uses his hands). Is smart and assignment-sound. Versatile.
Negatives: Stiff in the hips and straight-linish and has a tendency to play very upright. Marginal knee-bender - lands on the ground more than he should. Lacks substance and core strength and too often lets defenders get underneath his pads. Inconsistent hand use - plays with no shock in his punch. Struggles to counter against quickness.
Summary: Entered the program as a tackle and has enough length to contribute as a versatile, swing backup.
