Thompson isn't real comfortable in his back-pedal near the line of scrimmage and has a tendency to open his hips too quickly. Also, he gets caught with his feet too compact underneath him, causing him to get crossed up with his footwork and lose balance when asked to turn. Isn't real physical off the line and will struggle when asked to bump in the NFL. But he showcases a real commitment to the run game. Although he isn't the most technically sound tackler, Thompson attacks the football with a vengeance and isn't afraid to cut down ball carriers in space. Generates good power on contact for his size. Is much more confident and comfortable in off-coverage, which is enabled by his clean footwork and explosion when asked to drive on the ball. Exhibits good fluidity in space and has the ability to cleanly get out of his breaks and close on his man. Has a tendency to over-trust his closing speed and, at times, gives up too much cushion between him and the receiver. But he possesses good ball skills and body control when asked to get his hands on a pass. Thompson displays impressive range in zone coverage, but he isn't the most instinctive. Has a tendency to freelance and will take himself out of plays, opening some gaps behind him. Overall, he showcases the natural burst and closing speed to get after the ball. But he's a bit scheme-limited at the next level because of his lack of size and overall comfort level off the line. Looks like an ideal zone corner or off-man guy in the NFL.
