Notes: Lightly recruited linebacker-quarterback (also returned kicks) out of a small California school. Committed to then-head coach Tyrone Willingham and played all 13 games in 2007, starting four (three on the weak side, one in the middle) and recording 25 tackles, five for loss and one sack. Was the Huskies' leading tackler in '08 when he started all 12 games at weak-side linebacker and produced 105-12-1 with two pass breakups and one interception. Played the final game of the season with a left thumb injury. Moved to the strong side in '09, starting all 12 games and totaling 85-7½-2 with six pass breakups, three interceptions (37-yard TD against Arizona) and six forced fumbles. Made all 13 starts at WLB in '10 and was the nation's second-leading tackler - registered 163-14-6½ with three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Team captain.
Positives: Opportunistic when he has clear lanes - reacts quickly when he sees it. Good effort in pursuit. Solid wrap tackler. Outstanding tackle production. Tough and durable. Flashes playmaking ability - eight forced fumbles the past two seasons. Versatile - played all three LB spots and has special-teams value. Good intangibles.
Negatives: Tight in the hips. Average instincts. Inconsistent motor. Marginal weight-room strength and does not take on blocks with force. Average athletic ability, speed and closing burst. Gets hung up in congestion and does not clear his way through traffic. Overruns some plays and struggles to break down. Marginal feel in zone coverage.
Summary: Good-sized, experienced, opportunistic, slip-and-avoid weak-side linebacker with enough speed and athletic ability to function. However, is not instinctive, strong or consistent enough to be considered a long-term solution. Versatility and special-teams ability add to value.
