The Good: A sturdy, muscular lineman with impressive power and strength for his size. Displays a good first step out of his stance and does a nice job playing with natural leverage and flexibility around the corner. Uses his hands and upper body strength well to shed blocks and does a nice job finding the ball. Showcases good footwork and body control to redirect and close on the QB. The Bad: Not an elite athlete off the edge and doesn't have the burst to consistently hit the corner cleanly. Needs to be more physical with his hands. Not real fluid in drop, which could hinder him as a 3-4 outside linebacker.
Positives: Looks every bit the part of a dominant NFL pass rusher with a rocked-up physique and terrific take-off speed confirmed at the Combine with exceptional 10-yard times (1.53 seconds). Naturally athletic with smooth, fluid movement skills and excellent body control. Possesses an explosive burst, closes fast on the quarterback and finishes. Abused Oklahoma OLT Phil Loadholt with his quickness off the snap. Bends naturally and ranges to the sideline. Is agile dropping into coverage and posted a 391/2-inch vertical jump at the Combine. Excellent upper-body strength - can press off blocks and leverage the corner. Bench-presses 500-plus pounds. Strong tackler. Smart and passionate about the game. Negatives: Can still do a better job transferring his speed into power and harnessing his pass rush. Technique needs refinement. Still raw and his pass-rush arsenal can be expanded. Can improve anchoring at the point of attack and could be challenged by power. Awareness is not great and his motor does not always go. Durability needs to be examined. Summary: An exceptional blend of speed and power, Orakpo features threatening first-step quickness. Has bulked up 50 pounds since arriving in Austin, a testament to his work ethic. A smart, passionate player on the field with a level head off it, Orakpo did damage as a 4-3 open-side end in college but could thrive as a rush linebacker in a "30" front. Has the potential to become a defensive playmaker if his motor runs consistently. Grade: Top-15 talent.
