Four years ago, we ranked the top twenty-five Virginia Tech athletes playing professional. The list featured then Denver Broncos receiver Eddie Royal at the top of the list and included anyone from Brandon Flowers to Joe Saunders to Ace Custis. Today, we update the list with plenty of changes. [details]
The Good: Royal is an explosive playmaker who will immediately compete for a role as a slot receiver and return specialist. He's a breakaway threat as a receiver or as a returner. He has good cutting ability and is able to break tackles downfield. His speed, toughness and quickness help make up for his relative lack of size.
The Bad: He didn't put up great numbers as a college player, mainly because of Virginia Tech's deep receiving corps and inconsistent quarterback production. He lacks the imposing size necessary to be a No. 1 receiver. Royal needs some development in his strength and defense recognition before he's ready for extensive playing time.
