STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Sophomore linebacker Mike Mauti was expected to make a sizable contribution to Penn State's defense this fall, but he will now be forced to watch the 2009 season from the sidelines.

According to a source close to the situation, Mauti suffered a knee injury in Sunday's intersquad scrimmage. Preliminary reports are that Mauti has a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Further tests are scheduled in the near future.

The 6-foot-2, 231-pound sophomore recorded 26 tackles and forced a fumble as a true freshman in 2008. He was a key member of many of the Nittany Lions' special teams units. He does still have a redshirt season available to him.

He was expected to push senior Josh Hull for the third starting linebacker spot alongside Navorro Bowman and Sean Lee.
