Once upon a time they were just kids.

They weren't yet supersized or faster than speeding bullets. They weren't yet identified as future millionaires.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson's coach remembers the offensive tackle as being only 215 pounds when he moved him to the position his sophomore year at Freeport (N.Y.) High School. Michael Huff's coach said Huff was on the JV team as a sophomore and "we moved him up to varsity because we made the playoffs."

Suffice it to say Ferguson is not 215 pounds anymore, and Huff made himself known in those playoffs with a game-tying touchdown catch. Now both are surefire first-round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

As part of its NFL Draft coverage, Rivals.com has ventured to find the stories behind the stories. We've talked to more than 20 high school coaches of potential first-round picks to ask where these players came from and what separates them from the rest of the crop. Don't be surprised if you find some common traits.

Today we look back at where it all began for Minnesota running back Laurence Maroney.

Laurence Maroney
Position: Running Back
College: Minnesota
Vitals: 5-foot-11, 205 pounds
High school: St. Louis (MO) Normandy
Coach: Michael Jackson
When was the first time you remember thinking Laurence eventually could play in the NFL?: It was his sophomore year. He started at cornerback his freshman year, had a chance to run the ball a few times at tailback and had a few long touchdown runs. I realized that the next year he was going to be my starting tailback.

He took off his sophomore year and had close to 1,000 yards. From there, I knew he had a chance to be a Division I football player.

The key, when I talked to Laurence, was that physically he was ready, but he had to make sure he kept his mind together and focused on what he had to do. He had all kinds of ability, unlimited ability.

What's your fondest game memory of him?: It's back-to-back games. We were in our district trying to see who would go to the playoffs.

We played St. Charles High School, and he had 351 yards and five touchdowns. Then we played St. Charles West, and he had 349 yards and four rushing touchdowns, and he intercepted a pass and went for a touchdown.

In those two games, he not only showed he had speed, but he also kind of just bulled over guys. And I think he had 40-something carries both games. I told him, "We're going to ride you. We're just going to give you the ball."

When's the last time you spoke to him?: I talked to Laurence (on March 19). He was getting ready for his workouts at the University of Minnesota. Teams were going to see him March 23.

His attitude is great. He talked about how he was going to do the best he could. He's enjoying the process and working hard.

What's your draft prediction for him?: I would say the middle of the first round.
